Before 1969, engineering practice in Kenya was regulated using British standards. In 1969, the Engineers Registration Act, Cap 530 of 1969 was enacted and this birthed the Engineers Registration Board (ERB) whose main responsibility was to register and license engineers. This law had several inadequacies which necessitated its repeal to enable the Board effectively regulate the entire value chain of engineering, i.e. engineering education, engineering training and engineering practice.
The Engineers Registration Act, Cap 530 of 1969 was thus repealed in 2011 with the enactment of the Engineers Act 2011 which established the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) and gave it a wider mandate to register engineers and engineering consulting firms, regulate engineering professional services, set standards and develop the general practice of engineering.
Over the past 50 years the Board has achieved several milestones in carrying out its mandate. These range from growing the number of professional engineers and engineering consulting firms in the Board’s register, setting up the Graduate Engineers Internship Program, establishing an accreditation framework, the Continuing Professional Development Program, publishing the Engineers Manual, automation of the Board’s services, growth of assets to establishment of key partnerships at the local, regional and global levels.
During the celebrations, the Board seeks to bring together Engineers from various sectors to discuss Engineers’ inputs in the development of the Kenyan economy since 1969, how Engineering is key in driving Kenya’s Economic Agenda and the global SDGs, how the engineering labor force can be increased to meet the demand across various sectors, partnerships that will ensure quality engineering education is offered in Kenyan universities, opportunities available for engineers across the region and how engineers can be examples of good governance in execution of their duties.
This will ensure that the engineering profession in Kenya grows and gains global recognition to allow for more international mobility of Kenyan engineers.
